Safari Itinerary
Expand AllDay 1: Arrival in Arusha – Overnight at Jevas Hotel
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or in Arusha town, you will be warmly welcomed by our representative and transferred to Jevas Hotel. After settling in, you'll attend a detailed trek briefing with your mountain guide. This includes a gear check, a review of the route, and safety and altitude awareness protocols.
Spend the rest of the day relaxing and preparing for your adventure. Dinner is on your own (available at the hotel restaurant).
Overnight: Jevas Hotel (Bed & Breakfast)
Day 2: Arusha – Londorossi Gate – Mti Mkubwa Camp (Forest Camp)
After breakfast, depart Arusha and drive approximately 3–4 hours to Londorossi Gate for registration and permits. Then continue to the Lemosho trailhead where your trek begins through lush montane rainforest. The trail ascends gently, with possible sightings of colobus monkeys and other wildlife. Arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp, surrounded by forest.
Elevation: 2,100m to 2,650m
Distance: ~6 km | Trekking Time: 3–4 hrs
Overnight: Mti Mkubwa Camp
Day 3: Mti Mkubwa – Shira 1 Camp
Today’s hike takes you out of the forest into heath and moorland. As you ascend, the vegetation becomes sparser, and you’ll begin to see spectacular views of the Shira Plateau and Mount Meru in the distance.
The hike is steady and scenic, offering one of the most rewarding days in terms of changing landscapes.
Elevation: 2,650m to 3,610m
Distance: ~8 km | Trekking Time: 5–6 hrs
Overnight: Shira 1 Camp
Day 4: Shira 1 – Shira 2 Camp
A shorter day meant to help with acclimatization. You’ll cross the Shira Plateau, an ancient volcanic caldera, with sweeping views of Kibo Peak. The terrain is rocky with scattered shrubs and unique flora. Arrive at Shira 2 Camp in the early afternoon with time to rest or explore short acclimatization hikes.
Elevation: 3,610m to 3,850m
Distance: ~7 km | Trekking Time: 3–4 hrs
Overnight: Shira 2 Camp
Day 5: Shira 2 – Lava Tower – Barranco Camp
This is a crucial acclimatization day. Ascend to Lava Tower (4,630m), a massive volcanic rock formation, for lunch and acclimatization, before descending to Barranco Camp.
This “climb high, sleep low” approach significantly improves your chances of successful acclimatization.
Elevation: 3,850m to 4,630m (Lava Tower), then down to 3,976m
Distance: ~10 km | Trekking Time: 6–7 hrs
Overnight: Barranco Camp
Day 6: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp
Begin the day by scaling the famed Barranco Wall, a thrilling and rewarding scramble. At the top, enjoy expansive views of the surrounding valleys and glaciers. Continue along undulating trails with several ridges and valleys until you reach Karanga Camp, situated in a scenic valley below the glaciers of Kibo.
Elevation: 3,976m to 3,995m
Distance: ~5 km | Trekking Time: 4–5 hrs
Overnight: Karanga Camp
Day 7: Karanga – Barafu Camp
A short but steady climb leads you to Barafu Camp, the final stop before the summit. The landscape is stark and lunar-like. After lunch, rest and hydrate in preparation for your summit push, which begins shortly after midnight. Early dinner and early sleep are essential.
Elevation: 3,995m to 4,673m
Distance: ~4 km | Trekking Time: 3–4 hrs
Overnight: Barafu Camp
Day 8: Summit Day – Barafu to Uhuru Peak – Mweka Camp
Start the climb to Uhuru Peak at around midnight. Trek through the cold, dark early hours to reach Stella Point (5,756m), and then continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m)—Africa’s highest point!
After celebrating your achievement, begin the descent back to Barafu Camp for rest and brunch. Then continue down to Mweka Camp for your final night on the mountain.
Elevation: 4,673m to 5,895m (Uhuru), then to 3,100m
Distance: ~17 km | Trekking Time: 10–14 hrs
Overnight: Mweka Camp
Day 9: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Return to Arusha
After breakfast, make the final descent through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. Here, you’ll receive your summit certificates and say goodbye to your mountain crew.
A vehicle will be waiting to take you back to Arusha for a hot shower and some much-deserved rest at Jevas Hotel.
Elevation: 3,100m to 1,640m
Distance: ~10 km | Trekking Time: 3–4 hrs
Overnight: Jevas Hotel (Bed & Breakfast)
