The 6-Day Machame Route is one of the most popular and scenic ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Also called the “Whiskey Route“, this trail is known for its rich ecological variety, offering trekkers a chance to hike through lush rainforests, moorlands, alpine deserts, and glacier zones near the summit.

Covering about 62 kilometers, this route is designed to give climbers better acclimatization, following the “climb high, sleep low” principle. This significantly increases the success rate for reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m)—the highest point in Africa.

Unlike the Marangu Route, Machame is a camping route. Trekkers sleep in tents and are fully supported by a team of experienced guides, porters, and cooks, who ensure your safety, comfort, and nourishment throughout the climb.

Day 1: Machame Gate (1,800m) → Machame Camp (3,020m)

Your adventure begins with a steady ascent through the dense montane rainforest, home to exotic birds and blue monkeys. You’ll hike under a lush green canopy to reach Machame Camp.

Day 2: Machame Camp → Shira Camp (3,840m)

The trail leaves the forest and enters moorland. You’ll cross ridges and walk on open terrain as you make your way toward the expansive Shira Plateau.

  • Accommodation: Shira Camp

Day 3: Shira Camp → Lava Tower (4,630m) → Barranco Camp (3,950m)

A key acclimatization day. You ascend to Lava Tower before descending to Barranco Camp, allowing your body to adjust to the altitude.

Day 4: Barranco Camp → Karanga Camp (3,995m)

Climb the famous Barranco Wall—an exhilarating scramble with stunning views—then cross several valleys before arriving at Karanga Camp.

Day 5: Karanga Camp → Barafu Camp (4,673m)

A short but steep trek to Barafu Camp, your base for the summit attempt. Rest, hydrate, and sleep early to prepare for your midnight push to Uhuru Peak.

Day 6: Barafu Camp → Uhuru Peak (5,895m) → Mweka Gate (1,640m)

Summit Day! Depart just after midnight for the final ascent to Uhuru Peak—Africa’s highest point. After celebrating at the summit, descend to Barafu for rest, then continue down to Mweka Gate where your driver awaits.
